Project Description

What is TiPPER?

TiPPER is a browser extension that provides seniors with reliable and easily understood help (tips) for anything on the internet. Tips for popular landing sites like Google are created by TiPPER developers. Seniors and their friends and family helpers can use these and also make their own tips. Think digital sticky notes - that don't get lost.

How does it work?

With TiPPER turned on, detailed tips are revealed one at a time by mousing over web elements - find out what something is without having to click on it. Anyone with TiPPER can create tips for elements on the web and share them with the whole TiPPER world. Or not - keep your tips private if you like. Orange tips are shared, purple are personal.

What was my part?

One of four team members, I set up the research with the seniors, and conducted two of the six CI sessions and four usability studies. I contributed to all team meetings and documents, and created three prototypes. I also created a website to support our presentation of TiPPER as a work-in-progress at CHI 2015 in Seoul, South Korea.

Process Overview

Why do this?

Most seniors in the US use the internet daily, but frequently run into issues they cannot solve themselves. They depend on a family member or a friend to help them.

Research Methods

We conducted Contextual Inquiry with 6 participants and a survey with 25 participants to determine the difficulties and frustrations these users face with Internet use.

Resulting Design

From the research findings and usability testing with our prototypes, we designed TiPPER, a browser-based system to provide conxtextual help for seniors surfing the Web.
